Credit by Examination

College credit my be earned by passing an examination. AP (Advanced Placement) and CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) tests provide options for college credit by examination.

Advanced Placement (AP)

AP IconAdvanced Placement examinations are offered at the high school level only. A number of examination areas are available; not all high schools offer all available AP examinations. Generally, the major areas chosen include English, American history, mathematics, chemistry, and physics. Students who present Advanced Placement examination scores of 3, 4, or 5 may receive 3 to 10 University credits for each exam.

A student must be a matriculated student at USU Eastern to have AP credit recorded. AP scores and General Education waivers are evaluated according to the current policy at the time the request is made for an evaluation. In addition, if college credit has been awarded and duplicates the AP course work, the AP credit will be reduced by the amount of credit previously earned.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

CLEP IconThe CLEP examinations are designed for students who wish to utilize previous knowledge and experience in lieu of required coursework. CLEP is a national program of credit-by-examination, allowing students to obtain recognition for college-level achievement. This privilege is intended to measure information and training gained from practical experience that may be considered the equivalent of the experience and training received by students in an organized course given at the college.

Important information for students considering taking the CLEP Examinations

All students who are considering taking the CLEP exam to waive General Education requirements should first check with the Records Office for the following reasons:

  • Credit is not awarded if duplicated by previous examinations or course work. An example would be AP credit earned prior to taking a CLEP test in the same general education area.
  • Credit awarded is for the following tests only: General Examinations in English, Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science (Physical and Biological) and Subject Examinations in Western Civilization II and some language tests.
  • The Exams are offered at the USU Eastern Testing Office. Please contact the Testing Center for available testing times and dates.
  • A student must petition to have the credit noted on their transcripts.
  • Students must be enrolled and matriculated (degree seeking) to have the CLEP credit recorded.
  • CLEP credit is evaluated according to current policy at the time the request is made.
  • CLEP credit will be used to waive General Education area credit and will not be used to waive a specific course.
