English is a foundational skill that leads to success in all areas of life. It is crucial that students become comfortable with communicating both orally and in written form to encourage success. English is a foundational skill needed to accomplish this. Our courses are geared toward this end and encourage critical thinking skills instead of making sure a student can memorize certain grammar rules. Business owners are in desperate need of well-educated employees that can write clearly and effectively.

Each semester in each class I try to make the English experience accessible to students by incorporating interesting topics and approaches. Some topics have included history (Civil Rights and Elizabeth I) social issues (felon voting and physician assisted suicide) and personal reflection. Approaches have included utilizing music, videos, memes, lecture, group work, and community outreach. Although each course is writing intensive you can expect to learn much more than just English.
